Lake Oswego Our Lady Of The Lake.allaboutlakeoswegolivingaphotoblog.comLake Oswego Our Lady of the Lake

The Catholic church and parochial school in Lake Oswego is Our Lady of the Lake.  This is a picture of one of the many stained glass windows in the church and sits above its entrance.

I thought it would be appropriate to post this today considering it is Easter and Spirit Weekend on the photography circuit.  Happy Easter.

Oaks Pioneer Church

This 1851 church isn’t in Lake Oswego, but it sits on the opposite side of the Willamette River.  Recently I attended a wedding there.  The sun shot out unexpectedly that day so I took a picture.

Oaks Pioneer Church was moved three times to this final location.  Originally called the St. Johns Episcopal Church, the name was changed in 1961 when a ferry brought the church to is current location on the corner of Southeast Grand and Spokane in the Sellwood area of Portland.  It sits on a bluff above Oaks Park.

Inside, there’s a beautiful stained glass window but the wedding party was busy taking pictures so I didn’t take one, which gives me an excuse to go there another time.  There are approximately 300 weddings performed in this church each year, including  some funerals.

1890s Church

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gothic Revival Style circa 1890..

The Catholic Church owned this building until 1950 when its congregation built the current Our Lady of the Lake Church and moved to”A” Avenue.  Although the Sacred Heart Catholic Church building no longer serves any religious denomination, today it is a private residence and no longer a church but it is believed to be the oldest standing church structure in Lake Oswego.

This fine example of the Gothic Revival Style showcases such characteristic features as the steeply pitched gable roof and pointed-arch windows.  The entrance with the paired paneled doors and pointed-arch transom is sheltered by a gabled porch supported by stout beveled posts and brackets.  The decorated panel above the door is an additional ornamental element.  The original bell tower/steeple blew off the church during the Columbus Day storm of 1962.
